SWORD: One of the most prominent weapons
in the martial arts. There are many different
types of swords and many different ways of
using them. In CHINA, the sword is called
GIM and is used in various different styles
of KUNG-FU. In JAPAN, the most basic sword
was the single-bladed KATANA; it is slightly
curved and its blade is about two feet long.
The KATANA was the sword favored by the
SAMURAI, who held it in deep regard and
developed a series of ritual acts concerning its
treatment. The KATANA later formed the basis
of two sword-based Japanese martial arts:
KENDO and IAI-DO. In KENDO, however, the
katana has largely been replaced by the
wooden BOKKEN for reasons of safety. The
NINJA favored a slightly shorter sword, the
NINJA-TO, which was used solely as a weapon
and did not receive the same respect that the
SAMURAI accorded to the KATANA.
