  1. SWORD: One of the most prominent weapons 
  2. in the martial arts. There are many different 
  3. types of swords and many different ways of 
  4. using them. In CHINA, the sword is called 
  5. GIM and is used in various different styles 
  6. of KUNG-FU. In JAPAN, the most basic sword 
  7. was the single-bladed KATANA; it is slightly 
  8. curved and its blade is about two feet long. 
  9. The KATANA was the sword favored by the 
  10. SAMURAI, who held it in deep regard and 
  11. developed a series of ritual acts concerning its 
  12. treatment. The KATANA later formed the basis 
  13. of two sword-based Japanese martial arts: 
  14. KENDO and IAI-DO. In KENDO, however, the 
  15. katana has largely been replaced by the 
  16. wooden BOKKEN for reasons of safety. The 
  17. NINJA favored a slightly shorter sword, the 
  18. NINJA-TO, which was used solely as a weapon 
  19. and did not receive the same respect that the 
  20. SAMURAI accorded to the KATANA.
